What is the Biggest Country in Europe?

by admin on June 26, 2008

France is the biggest country in Europe at almost 675,000 square kilometers. Some people may think that Denmark, including Greenland is the biggest country, but Greenland was granted autonomy from Denmark in 1978 and is considered to be an Autonomous Province in the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenland is a parliamentary democracy within a constitutional monarchy – like Canada.

Since part of Russia lies in Europe, some say it is the biggest country in Europe, but its borders do not fully lie within Europe, so I have classified the biggest country as that whose borders lie fully within Europe’s boundaries.

Coming in at a close second is the Ukraine at just over 606,000 square kilometers. Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
