The smallest cat in the world is the Rusty Spotted Cat that lives in Southern India at 35-48 centimeters in length, not including the tail and weighing in at approximately 1.5 kilograms. This little cutie rivals the Black Footed Cat found in Africa. These cats are wild, not domesticated.
They have been described as friendly and playful. This makes them desirable as a house pet. Sadly, the IUCN lists both the Rusty Spotted and the Black Footed cats as Vulnerable. This means that unless their circumstances change, the Rusty Spotted Cat and the Black Footed Cat will become Endangered.
As with many species of cats, the Rusty Spotted Cat is nocturnal. Their diet consists of birds, small rodents and lizards. The Black Footed Cat has a very similar diet, but is known for its ferocity and has been seen attacking the jugular of a giraffe! (Go go gadget legs!)
I haven’t taken into account any house cats listed in the Guiness Book of World Records, but here is a noteworthy feline: Mr. Peebles from Illinois; due a genetic defect, he weighs only 1.4 kilograms.
