Any man who has a girlfriend has a pretty good idea what chick flick is all about; most likely going to their fair share throughout the relationship. Like many other sayings we assume these terms have been around forever but in fact, they all have a beginning.
In the 1980’s the term “chick flick” meant a movie that was sexually explicit; akin to soft core pornography. It was appropriated to mean a movie that a woman or chick would enjoy: generally referring to Romantic comedies or movies that feature powerful female characters. First mentioned in The Bergen County Record in 1988, the term was equated with such movies as Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Twilight People and Black Mama, White Mama. The movie Thelma and Louise was unofficially credited with popularizing the term.
By the mid 1990’s, the phrases “chick film” and “chick flick” became firmly entrenched into the dreaded term we know and love today. Although, if you are a man, you might want to run screaming at your girlfriend’s mention of watching a “chick flick”, just remember watching these movies may make your girl snuggly and lovey; or maybe even put her in the mood. Maybe it is worth the hour and a half out of your life?
